Ball screw is the mechanical gear that converts the rotary motion of the servo drive shaft into the linear displacement along X, Y, Z axes.
Ball screw consists of a screw and a nut, made of black low-alloy steel, which composition is maintained in confidence by the manufacturers of ball screw.
Screw is manufactured with a thread of different step from 5 to 40 mm, which value is very important in order to achieve the required displacement speed.
Along the perimeter of its steel housing, the nut is provided with several chains of steel balls of small diameter on the special plastic-and-rubber sleeve. Design and quality of these balls effect significantly on the positioning accuracy while the translational motion.
Principle of operation
While rotation of the servodrive shaft, the screw of ball screw initiates the rotary motion by means of the clutch. Nut balls are coupling and they start moving along the thread and the nut performs the translational motion along the screw.
In most cases, the screw is situated between two rail guides with blocks. The special platform, attached to the nut, moves the carriages along the guidance rails.
Application
- CNC Routers
- Plasma cutting machines
- Laser machines
- Positioning tables
- Robotic industry, instrumentation engineering
